Advice from a 500-hour-certified instructor

Victoria Wright is a 500-hour certified yoga instructor and a woman who's had a fuller bust all her life. Now in her 60's, she's a model, an entrepreneur, and a recent Ms. Senior Massachusetts pageant winner. Victoria was a recent guest on my show, Off Your Chest, where we talked about style and support for yoga.

When I asked her about her practice, she didn't mention a technique, or a teacher, or a transformative retreat. She talked about her top:

"I can do my upside down poses and nothing spills out. I don't have to keep pulling things down to make sure my belly's not showing. It's just perfect."

- Victoria Wright, 500-hour certified yoga instructor

If you have a DD+ bust, you already know the struggle of not being able to fully relax into your practice without worrying about slippage with your activewear. Downward Dog and other inverted poses mean constant anxiety about modesty and containment. With most activewear, you spend half of class tucking and tugging things back into place, distracted from the very ease and mental flow you're there to achieve.

Sports bras aren't a perfect solution either, because the ones strong enough to actually hold you in place are usually digging into your shoulders so hard that you can't lift your arm over your head for a side bend. And the chest band squeezes your ribs so tight that you can't take a full breath, which defeats the entire point of breath work.

So what actually works? Here's what to look for in a yoga top when you have a large bust (DD through L cup), why most "built-in bra" tops fail fuller busts, and how to tell real support from compression before you waste your money on another disappointing purchase.

Why Yoga Is Harder With a Large Bust

Most activewear is designed for a B or C cup and then scaled up for larger bodies. But as any larger busted yogi can tell you, a fuller bust has completely different physics than a smaller one. It's heavier, and it moves more. That volume, weight, torque, and force means it requires more complex engineering for good support (especially whilst upside-down). Here's what we're up against in a typical yoga class:

  • Forward folds and inversions send all your weight toward your collarbone, so tops without good coverage can shift and spill.

  • Sports bras strong enough for a full bust rely on a tight underband and heavy compression. But yoga is about breathing; a band squeezing your rib cage during pranayama is fighting everything you came to the mat for.

  • Narrow one-inch straps carry the full weight of your bust on two little pressure points on top of your shoulders. You feel it by the end of class, and you can see the grooves in your shoulders after.

  • And then there's the dreaded uniboob. Compression flattens everything into one shapeless mass smashed onto your chest, which feels and looks uncomfortable and isn't exactly a look anyone loves.

I've lived through all of this too, which is why I designed Embrago. Activewear has never been kind to larger busts. The good news is that better design can address all these problems (and we deserve a better solution)!

5 Things to Look For in a Yoga Top (When You're Working With More)

1. Support without an elastic underband

This is the single biggest upgrade for yoga. The bra industry will tell you that 80% of your support should come from the chest band, which is exactly why traditional bras and sports bras squeeze your rib cage so hard. (Larger bust volume means even a well-fitted bra squeezes harder to counteract gravity). That band restricts the deep, expansive breathing yoga is built on. Look for designs where the support comes from panel construction and seam architecture instead of elastic bands around your ribs, so you can take a full, deep breath that fills your whole rib cage in every pose.

2. Wide straps that spread the weight around

A full bust hanging from narrow straps concentrates all that force into two narrow grooves on your shoulders, which can pinch your skin, muscles, and nerves. Ouch. Look instead for a wide strap base, 2 to 3 inches, that distributes the load across the whole shoulder. Or, even better, choose a double strap so there's no single pressure point at all. Once you experience this, you'll never want to go back to those skinny digging straps with the metal hardware.

3. Lift and shape, not flatten and squish

There are two ways to keep a bust from bouncing: squish it flat, or lift it and hold it. Most sports bras and shelf-bra tops squish. Above a C or D cup, squishing looks bad (hello again, uniboob) and feels worse. Real support for a DD+ bust lifts from below and from the side, and holds all around, so you keep your natural shape while everything stays exactly where you put it.

4. Coverage that stays put upside down

This is Victoria's test, and a challenge for every full-busted woman: can you go into down dog, a forward fold, or a full inversion without anything falling out, falling down, or shifting? A top that only stays in place while you're standing in front of a fitting room mirror is not a top that's going to work for your full range of motion.

5. Breathable, skin-friendly fabric

Yoga means warmth, sweat, and fabric pressed against your skin for an hour or more. Natural fabrics like organic cotton breathe and absorb instead of trapping sweat under your breasts, the way synthetic compression fabrics do. If your skin is sensitive, look for OEKO-TEX certified fabric. Pro Tip: check for covered seams and tag-free construction. A small itch can become unbearable forty minutes into a heated class.

Sports Bra vs. Built-In Bra Top vs. Bra-Free Support

These three categories may sound similar, but they support a fuller bust in completely different ways:

Sports Bra

"Built-In Bra" Top

Bra-Free Support

How it works

Rigid compression plus a tight underband

Thin elastic shelf bra and liner

Patented panels & seams distribute weight, no pressure points

Works above a D cup?

Yes, but uses heavy compression

No. Shelf bras quit above C/D cup and flatten instead of lifting

Yes, specifically designed for DD through L cups

Rib cage & breathing

Tight band restricts deep breathing

Elastic band under bust, some breath restriction

Bandless. Nothing constricts the ribs; freedom to breathe

Straps

Standard straps, single pressure point, often with metal hardware

Thin straps, minimal support role and weight digs

2.5"-wide strap base; double cross-strap offset from shoulder, no single pressure point

Shape

Flattened uniboob

Unsupported natural spread

Lifted, separated, natural shape

After class

Change out of it ASAP; red marks and grooves

Fine, but you needed a real bra under it anyway

Wear it the rest of the day: it's a top, activewear, and support all in one

The Tops That Pass the Inversion Test

Embrago offers three activewear tops with bra-free support and our patented full support system. They all have the same support; you can choose the coverage you want.

The original Full Support Bra-Top for full torso coverage

This is the one Victoria wears and raves about on the show. Full-length coverage through the belly, so nothing rides up in a forward fold and nobody sees your midriff. It works as a supportive base layer under cardigans, a fashion top on its own, and activewear for yoga and Pilates. One piece, three ways to wear it. --> Shop The Ultimate Top

The Bra-Free Waist-Length Crop hits at the natural waist

Same support system in a slightly shorter cut. Barely any midriff shows, and it pairs beautifully with high-waisted leggings. A customer favorite. --> Shop the Waist-Length Crop

The Bra-Free Micro Crop for a little midriff and a lot of freedom

The shortest of the three, showing a bit of midriff. Full support, and noticeably cooler for heated classes and summer practice. --> Shop the Micro Crop

All three styles are made with organic cotton OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, with no-itch covered seams, a tag-free interior, and machine washability, sized for DD-L cups.

One fit tip: Embrago is cut larger in the bust than most brands, so most women go down a size from what they normally wear. Check the size chart on each product page, and if you land between two sizes, size down for the most secure lift or up for a roomier hold. Still unsure? Email us and we'll help you dial it in.

An Honest Note About High-Impact Workouts

Embrago gives you the same support as a full support underwire bra, without the wire and without the band, and it holds you securely through the full range of motion in activities like yoga, Pilates, barre, hiking, gardening, and pickleball. It isn't designed for high-impact bouncing like running or HIIT. But for yoga and low- to medium-impact movement, the bandless design gives you something no other compression top can: real security and completely free breathing at the same time.

Victoria's Realization

Victoria came to yoga later in life. She earned her 500-hour certification during the pandemic, after decades of living in the background and feeling, in her own words, "deeply hidden." She started yoga for how it would make her look (to get a "yoga body"). But after she got into her practice, she realized something that she shared with me on the show:

"Everyone already has a yoga body. It doesn't matter what your body looks like."

-- Victoria Wright

This is such an encouraging thought. The size of our bust shouldn't prevent us from moving our bodies the way we want to, on the yoga mat or anywhere else. We just need activewear that is actually designed for us. (What a concept!)

FAQ: Yoga Tops for a Large Bust

What are the best tops for Pilates and yoga with a big bust?

Look for built-in support that lifts rather than compresses, with no chest underband constricting your ribcage (so you can breathe fully), wide weight-distributing straps, and coverage that stays put in inversions. Embrago's Full Support Bra-Free Top, Waist-Length Crop, and Micro Crop have these features and are designed specifically for DD-L cups.

Are built-in bra tops enough support for DD+ cups?

Most aren't. Typical built-in-bra tops use a tight elastic shelf that quits supporting above a C/D cup, flattening or squishing a fuller bust instead of lifting it. Embrago is bandless: a patented support system lifts and shapes a genuinely fuller bust (DD-L) with no underband on your ribs and no straining against too-small cups. It's the support of a bra, integrated right into your clothing.

Can I really do yoga without a bra if I have a large bust?

Yes, with the right garment. In real-world user tests, our customers report unanimously that no one can tell they aren't wearing a bra, including through movement. Victoria Wright, a 500-hour certified instructor with a full bust, practices and demonstrates in hers, inversions included. And we back it with a 30-day wear test and 100% money-back guarantee.

Is a bandless top secure enough for exercise?

For low- to medium-impact exercise and bendy movement like yoga, Pilates, barre, walking/hiking, gardening, and pickleball, yes. The support comes from its unique seam and panel construction rather than chest band compression, so it holds securely through your full range of motion while letting you breathe deeply. It isn't designed for high-impact bouncing like running or HIIT.

Will the support stretch out over time?

No. The support comes from the patented panel construction, not from elastic that fatigues. Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry, and it holds its shape and lift, wash after wash.

What if my size changes with postpartum, perimenopause, or weight shifts?

That's exactly what it's made for. Body Responsive Fit™ means the top adapts as your body shifts with hormones and weight fluctuations, rather than locking you into one size. (I invented it during my own perimenopausal bra struggles to solve this exact problem!)

Is it okay for sensitive skin?

Yes. There's no elastic, and the body of the garment is made with naturally soft, breathable organic cotton, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified and tested for harmful substances. The covered interior seams and tag-free design protect sensitive skin from pressure and irritation.
